Dojo Etiquette
This will be a list of what to expect and how to behave in your Dojo. While the full list is quite long set out by Hanshi Cebrerano, this will be a general list of Traditional Values and Common Sense around the Dojo.

 

Rules and Formalities are designed to uphold the good name of your Dojo as well as not to injure any of your fellow students.

 

Rules on respect will build a good foundation that you should echo throughout life and society.

 Standards and Policies

  • The Sensei reserves the right to suspend any student at any time
  • Memorization of the "Student Creed" is mandatory
  • International Goju Karate is a nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. No one will be refused membership on the grounds of sex, race or creed

 Personal Hygiene

  • Cleanliness will be practised by all
  • Uniforms must be kept clean
  • Keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed short

 Wearing Apparel

  • A complete uniform must be worn by all students who have completed the introductory program
  • The belt must be worn in a proper fashion, in the color representing your correct rank, and must be worn at all times
  • if the belt becomes undone during practice, the student will face in the opposite direction from his opponent or class and secure the belt
  • All clothing and shoes are re to be left in the dressing rooms during class times
  • No clothing or uniform is to be left in the Dojo overnight(instructors are exempt)
  • All male student are required to wear cup protectors during kumite training
  • No footwear to be worn on the training floor unless approved by the Sensei
  • No jewelry will be worn that would be detrimental to you or your fellow students
  • Complete protective gear must be worn during sparring classes. At a minimum this includes foot-gear, hand-gear and a mouth protector

 Conduct In and Out of the Dojo

  • Students will behave in a orderly and respectful manner while training
  • Unnecessary roughness, crude language, or a display of ill temper or disrespect is strictly forbidden
  • Always address instructor as Sampai (name) or Sensei (name)
  • Students arriving late must obtain permission to train by the Sensei after completing proper bow in formalities
  • Always observe mat etiquette in the Dojo
    This includes
    • Bowing when entering the training area
    • Street shoes are never worn in the training area
    • Wearing complete uniform in the training area
    • No gum or gum chewing is allowed in the training area
  • Only students in the training area unless special permission given by the Sensei
  • Do not free spar or kick the bags before the commencement of class
  • Do not free spar or kick the bags towards the mirrors
  • Keep bottles and trash off the floor and benches
  • Never lean on walls, furniture or stand with your hands on your hips, or have your arms folded during class
  • Do not punch and kick walls
  • No student is too designate themselves as instructor and teach other students
  • Student that visit other schools must remember to refrain from making any critical comments about any of the styles or instructors of the other martail arts
  • Bow to visiting Back Belts from other schools
  • Do not wear your uniform in public unless you are participating in a demonstration, en-route to the Dojo, or working out doors
  • No talking unless you have permission
  • Permission must be sort from instructor to leave the floor or Dojo. Students will leave the Dojo after training in a quiet manner and not cause disruption to local residents
  • The authority of instructors will be recognized and respected at all times during training
  • Smoking is prohibited in the Dojo
  • No one is allowed to enter the Dojo while under the influence of alcohol or any controlled or prohibited substance

 Formalities

  • All students must bow to any Dojo(Judo, Aikido, Kendo, etc) front when entering
  • All shoes are removed before you enter the training area. You must bow in upon entering the training area
  • Bowing in ceremony is done before starting or ending of any class
  • When asked to be seated, bow then go to the side of the room kneel and bow then be seated on the floor in a crossed leg position
  • Never lean on walls, furniture or stand with your hands on your hips, or have your arms folded during class. This shows disrespect to your instructors
  • Do not learn any kata that is above your grade level, only when the instructor has given permission to go to the next kata should you attempt to learn the next kata
