Miyagi Sensei was born into nobility in Naha City, Okinawa, the date 25th April 1888. At 9 years old he started training with Kanryo Higaonna, and stayed with him for 14 years. At Higaonna's suggestion, Miyagi Sensei traveled to a temple in central China where he studied the martial arts and Zen.

After many years he returned to Okinawa where he systemized the Goju-ryu principles, and founded his own school. He developed the Sanchin and Tensho forms, incorporating Shorei movements with Zen breathing as he learned in China. Miyagi Chojun died in Ishikawa, Okinawa, on October 8th 1953.
